A Round up of SSP Festivals, Competition & Training

What an extremely busy two terms the Partnership has enjoyed working with our Primary Schools getting more pupils more active in a broad range of sports and activities.

The Sports hall Athletics competition has been fun, fast and furious! We organised 4 events for years 3 & 4, and 4 events for years 5 & 6 at 4 different venues accumulating in an exciting closely contended final at Ashton Park School. Records for jumping, throwing and running were set and broken! Headley Park and St Peters as top teams will represent Bristol in the level 3 Games at UWE in January.

Following requests from schools to organise a sports hall athletics festival for KS 1, the younger pupils enjoyed adapted fun run, jump, and throw events in this new event.

The basketball league was as popular as ever with 18 teams entering the competition. The skill level improved week by week with excited players determined to score baskets and dribble their way to victory! The top 4 teams, Waycroft, Fair Furlong, New Oak and ???? will represent us in the cross city Bristol Sport Cup in conjunction with the Bristol Flyers early in the New Year.

Over 20 teams entered The Tag Rugby competition held at Broad Plain Rugby Club. The level of skill was so impressive, parent support was fantastic and the sportsmanship displayed was exemplary. Headley Park and St Bernadette were the top teams in the Mitre 10 Cup Premiership, Victoria Park and Christ Church, the top teams in the National Rugby Championship and Waycroft and Parsons Street, the top teams in the Aviva League.

The Cross Country competition and County Finals held at Ashton Park School welcomed hundreds of excited runners from years 3 – 6. The muddy conditions did not dampen their spirits or eagerness to cross the line to win a medal. The top 20 boys and girls were invited to represent Bristol at the County Finals. Hurricane Angus passed us by and Claire Balding in Radio 2 gave us an enthusiastic shout out! 350 athletes battled through the cold, muddy conditions to earn their team T shirts and race for medals.

A new event added to the calendar was the years 3 & 4 netball skills festival. This event encouraged schools to send pupils to have fun, try out new skills and play adapted netball games. Under the leadership of Sue Anderson, the youngsters had a great time improving their skills.

‘Take the Lead’ training for young leaders took place in West Town Lane Academy and Christ Church. The young leaders applied to be a young leader and are in post and leading activities during play times to encourage pupils to be more active.

Congratulations to Victoria Park and St Mary Redcliffe School for achieving Silver and Bronze School Games Award. A fantastic whole school effort in making activity so central to school life.

Teaching and support staff have had the opportunity to up skill, gain knowledge and confidence through the training modules we have organised. The FA Teachers’ course was well attended and provided many fresh ideas for drills and skills in all invasion games. The NQT focus was games activities and again provided delegates with the confidence to use the STEP process to adapt activities to engage, support and challenge all pupils. Teachers in KS 1 enjoyed the Developing Physical Literacy course and the many fun games and activities to develop the building blocks of activity: Agility, Balance, Co-ordination.

Preparations have already started for our 6 KS 1 Dance Fests in Terms 3 & 4. The theme is Barnaby Bear Dances around the World. He has already been to Africa, Wales, Antarctic, Spain and Brazil in New Oak ,Waycroft School and St Bernadette! He will be continuing his travels in the New Year!

Many thanks to all our young leaders at Ashton Park, St Bernadette and Bedminster Down who  gave their time so generously to assist at our events by referring, selling refreshments, leading small groups, measuring, recording and generally being fantastic!!
